My name is Lizzie, I'm 10 years old and in the 4th grade.
I like origami and drawing, and littlest pet shop. I love Hello Kitty too.
I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers. My little sister Becca gets her finger poked sometimes to make sure her sugar level is ok. My mommy has some friends whose kids are sick with diabetes, and I wanted to do something to help, so my mommy and I came up with the Cranes 4 a Cure. I want to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. My sister is lucky, she doesn't have diabetes, but a lot of kids do, and it isn't fair. Anyone can get juvenile diabetes, you don't have to have a family history. I think they need to find a cure fast so the kids who have it can be needle free, I don't like needles.

So I guess you want to know what Cranes 4 a Cure is.
It is said that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish. Sometimes relatives or friends fold the cranes for someone who has an illness in hopes for recovery or a long life.

My goal is to raise $1,000.00. For every dollar I raise, I am going to make an origami crane and put the name of the person who sent me that dollar on the wing. Then I am going to string all the cranes together and give it to the juvenile diabetes foundation with all the money I raise. Then my wish will be to find a cure. Please help me help those kids with this bad disease. My mommy says she will take a picture of every crane I make and post it here for everyone to see. For more information, please email my mommy, her name is Jenny. A dollar isn't a lot, but it can make a difference. I hope to get some pictures of kids you can help soon.
Thank you.

Cranes 58 - 60

Cranes 58, 59 and 60 are possible because of Delores, Melanie and Cris.
It's been a busy week around my house this week. I'm so behind on photos. These were actually for yesterday but my mommy has been sick. I didn't forget a picture of my brothers and sisters, I just can't get them to sit still. Mommy let me have the little camera to take pictures, maybe I will try again tonight.

I do have some exciting news to share though. Next Wednesday WEAR is coming to my school to interview me for a story for the news. How cool is that? I can't wait. The other thing I wanted to share is that you don't have to put blogspot after cranes4acure anymore. you can just type Cranes4aCure.com and it brings you right to this page. My daddy bought me a domain name. Thank you everyone who has donated. See you tomorrow!

Cranes 54 - 57

Cranes 54 and 55. Dona and Karla. Thank you.

And Cranes 56 and 57 are thanks to John and Jack (Jack is my big brother).
Thank you both.
Tonight Jack made dinner for us. He grilled steaks and potatoes and mommy made mushrooms and onions. He made chicken for Emily since she can't eat steak because of her braces. Tomorrow I think I'm going to post a picture of all my brothers and sisters for you.

Cranes 50 - 53

Cranes 50 and 51 are Jacob and Jason. Jason has diabetes. Thanks guys.

Cranes 52 and 53 are Sophie and Margaret. Thank you both.

It's getting hot here. It is 81 degrees out. It makes everything sticky. Daddy says he's going to have to turn the air on soon. Mommy said when he does, then I can string the cranes together. She said that if I do it now, the paper will get all weird.

Cranes 47 - 49

Cranes 47 - 49 are made possible by Ashton, Carter and Emily. Thanks so much.

I thought I'd also post my charts. I made them for each $100.00 I raise. I've raised $135.00 thanks to 70 people. That is a lot, but I still have far to go.

And see this dollar? Mommy is teaching me how to make them. I take them when we have t-shirt day at school (like we did today) my school uses the money for different things. Last time it was for relay for life I think, today was for technology for the classrooms. My teacher asked me to walk around the class and show everyone, she thought it was awesome.

Thanks for donating...if you haven't please think about doing so. It's for a good cause.

Cranes 36 - 40 and some information

Cranes 36, 37 and 38. I have to say something about each of these. Thank you Gisela, I love the paper you sent me. Dona, thank you so much for your donations. Each dollar brings me that much closer. And Tawnya...her crane is special. Tawnya's crane was made in her memory, she died late last year. I gave her crane a halo.

Cranes 39 and 40 are my nana Bonnie and papa Coleman. My papa has diabetes too. Thank you both and thank you for the paper. I like the shiny paper, but it is hard to work with.

And now some information on Juvenile Diabetes and why it is so important to find a cure.

Juvenile Diabetes or Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved.

Affects Children and Adults
Type 1 diabetes strikes people at any age. It comes on suddenly, causes dependence on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications.

Needs Constant Attention
To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes must take multiple insulin injections daily or continually infuse insulin through a pump. They must also test their blood sugar by pricking their fingers for blood six or more times a day. While trying to balance insulin doses with their food intake and daily activities, people with this form of diabetes still must always be prepared for serious hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemic (high blood sugar) reactions, both of which can be life-limiting and life threatening.

Not Cured By Insulin
While insulin injections or infusions allow a person with type 1 to stay alive, they do not cure diabetes, nor do they necessarily prevent the possibility of the disease's devastating effects, which may include: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputations, heart attack, stroke, and pregnancy complications.

Difficult to Manage
Despite paying rigorous attention to maintaining a meal plan and exercise regimen and always injecting the proper amount of insulin, people with type 1 diabetes face many other factors that can adversely affect efforts to tightly control blood sugar levels. These factors include stress, hormonal changes, periods of growth, physical activity, medications, illness/infection, and fatigue.

Statistics

  • As many as three million Americans may have type 1 diabetes. 1
  • Each year, more than 15,000 children and 15,000 adults - approximately 80 people per day - are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the U.S.2

Warning Signs

Warning signs of type 1 diabetes may occur suddenly and include:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Drowsiness or lethargy
  • Increased appetite
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Sugar in the urine
  • Fruity odor on the breath
  • Heavy or labored breathing
  • Stupor or unconsciousness
my mommy helped me get that information, I don't know what a lot of it means, but I do know that it can kill. And you need needles daily...that can't be fun. Help me help them. Thank you!

Cranes 32 and 33 are made possible by Jody and Delores. Thank you both. Jody went to school with my mommy.

Cranes 34 and 35 are possible thanks to Mary and Laurel. Thank you both!

Thank you Dona, Estie and Zoe! And thank you to everyone who has donated so far. Last night I reached $100.00! Only 900 left. My papa and nana dropped off some more paper too.

Cranes 24 - 28

Cranes 24 - 28 are possible because of Dona and Charity! Thank you both

Today I went to Walgreens with my mommy to get some medicine for Becca. One of my older cousins work there and she showed her manager my blog last week. When she got Becca's medicine, she told me her manager invited me to the Walgreens Walkathon to raise money for Diabetes. She was going to call us later, but since we were there, she told us. She said I could set up a table for my Cranes.
Today was t-shirt day at school. The only catch was it had to be green. My mommy made green cookies and my class had a green buffet. It was fun. Happy St. Patricks Day, see you tomorrow.

Cranes 21 -23

Cranes 21 -23 are my sisters Allie and Becca and my brother Morris. Morris drives me nuts. Thank you guys for helping me out.
I also wanted to update on how much I've raised so far. The ChipIn up in the corner only shows a little. So far I've raised $89.00. That means I've got a lot of cranes to make. Thanks everyone who has helped so far. Please share my page so that we can get the word out. I know everyone is thinking of Japan at this time. It is a very sad thing that happened and I pray for the people there. We still need a cure for Diabetes though.

This is some of my new paper. You can't really see it good, but the pink paper in the corner has cranes on it. I like all of my new papers and my nana and papa just told me they got me some too!

Cranes 18 - 20

Yesterday I went to my grandpa's farm to help pick up pinecones. For every pinecone, we get a penny. I picked up a lot. Then we played in the horse trailer. Then we had hot dogs and came home. I went to bed late and got to sleep in this morning.

Thanks to David (Heather sent me a dollar to make it in his name) Mrs. Jordan, my guidance counselor and Mrs. Robin. My Hello Kitty paper also came in yesterday, mommy got me some flowered paper too, I can't wait to make cranes out of it.

Cranes 16 and 17

It's Friday. See, I'm already in regular clothes...most pictures mommy takes when I still have my school uniform on. We didn't have show and tell today, but there is always next week. My guidance counselor donated though.
Thank you Marci and Nikki for your donations.
Tomorrow we are going to visit my uncle and help him pick up pinecones. He pays us a penny a pinecone, I think I can pick up a couple hundred no problem to add to Cranes4aCure, don't you?

Cranes 13-15

Thank you Mrs. Phyllis, Michael and Judge Marci.
Today mommy checked me out of school with a stomach ache. I hope I don't have it tomorrow because I'm bringing 13 cranes for show and tell tomorrow, and telling my class about Cranes 4 a Cure. Mommy says they can write their names on the wings and she'll put the $13.00 in for them. I can't wait. One of my friends is coming home with me to spend the night too because her daddy is having surgery.

Cranes 2 and 3

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Cruz. They are the nicest neighbors ever.
Yesterday I told my Sunday school class about Cranes4aCure. They decided at the end of the year that all the Tzedakah money our class collected throughout the year will be donated to Cranes4aCure. With everyone that is helping me, I know I will reach my goal. Thank you!
